TENNIS SENSATION Alex Eala goes after another milestone at the US Open on Saturday night when she faces American rising star and close friend Iva Jovic in a highly anticipated third-round showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 21-year-old Filipina, seeded No. 17, entered the match riding the confidence of two dominant victories in New York and hoping to reach the US Open Round of 16 for the first time in her career.
Eala and the No. 14-seeded Jovic are meeting in the first match of Saturday’s night session at 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Sept. 5 (7 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, Philippine time) at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the US Open’s main court. The match is part of the women’s singles third round.
The matchup carries an unusual twist: Eala and Jovic are close friends and have already met twice this season, with the American winning both encounters. Saturday’s meeting, however, will be their first official clash on a hard court.
Eala has given herself plenty of reason for optimism.
The Filipina star opened her campaign by crushing American qualifier Mary Stoiana, 6-1, 6-2, before producing another impressive performance against Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova, whom she defeated 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.
The victory over Oliynykova was particularly significant after the Ukrainian had beaten Eala earlier this season. Eala responded with a commanding display, needing just over an hour to book her place in the third round.
Jovic, meanwhile, comes into the match as the higher-ranked player at No. 14 and has already established herself as one of the most promising young players on the WTA Tour.
The 18-year-old American has beaten Eala twice this year, including at the French Open and Queen’s Club. That gives Jovic a 2-0 advantage in their head-to-head record heading into their latest encounter.
The odds slightly favor Jovic.
The betting market sees the match as a competitive one.
Latest bookmaker lines have Jovic favored at around -138, with Eala at approximately +110 on the moneyline. Other current markets list Jovic around 1.72 decimal odds and Eala around 2.13, although prices can move before the match.
Those numbers translate roughly to a 58% implied chance for Jovic and 48% for Eala before accounting for the bookmaker’s margin, meaning the market gives the American an edge but hardly considers the match a foregone conclusion.
Interestingly, Kalshi’s prediction market was more favorable toward Eala as of Friday evening, with Eala’s match contract trading around 47-48 cents compared with 52-53 cents for Jovic. Eala contracts were also trading at a much higher volume, showing the intense interest surrounding the Filipina’s run.
One of Eala’s biggest advantages could once again come from the stands.
Filipino fans have already made their presence felt during her first two matches, with Philippine flags, signs and loud support turning her Louis Armstrong Stadium appearances into something resembling a home-court experience.
That support is expected to grow even louder on Saturday (Sunday in Manila), with Barangay New York and Filipino communities from across the New York area expected to rally behind Eala as she steps onto Arthur Ashe Stadium for the biggest singles match of her US Open campaign.
The move to Ashe also gives Eala a bigger stage—and potentially an even bigger Filipino crowd.
Her growing following, widely described as “Ealamania,” has become one of the stories of her breakthrough season. Eala has responded to the attention with increasingly mature performances, combining her aggressive left-handed game with improved patience and court management.
Off the court, Eala and Jovic share a genuine friendship that developed through their years on the junior and professional circuits. They even played an exhibition match together during US Open Fan Week at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
But that friendship will take a back seat once the match begins.
A place in the Round of 16 is at stake, and Eala knows the challenge is significantly different from their previous meetings.
The hard court in New York should suit Eala’s aggressive baseline game, while Jovic’s combination of power, movement and confidence has made her one of the tournament’s dangerous young players.
Eala has also arrived in New York with considerable momentum after a breakthrough season that included her first WTA singles title in Washington and a historic run to the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Now she has a chance to add another first: a US Open fourth-round appearance.
