Bad Weather Death Count Climbs to 39

THE NUMBER OF fatalities arising from the combined effects of recent tropical cyclones and the Southwest Monsoon (locally referred to as Habagat) now stands at 39, says the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

In its Wednesday morning report, Benguet recorded the highest number of fatalities at 15, including 10 in Baguio City, two in La Trinidad, and three in Atok, all due to landslides.

The province of Rizal recorded four deaths — two were killed after a rock boulder pinned a shanty in Rodriguez town, one due to a fallen tree in Antipolo City, and one died of drowning in Binangonan.

Batangas also had four fatalities — one death each was recorded in Batangas City due to drowning, Lipa due to electrocution, Santa Teresita due to a landslide, and Mabini due to drowning.

Zambales recorded three casualties — two from a landslide in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone on the Morong, Bataan side as well as one in Olongapo City.

Three persons drowned to death in Caloocan City.

Two deaths each were reported in Pampanga, Quezon, and Occidental Mindoro, while La Union, Pangasinan, Oriental Mindoro and Negros Occidental each recorded one fatality.

The OCD also reported 20 injured persons and three people still missing.

WRATH DEMOGRAPHICS

The OCD recorded over 9.4 million people (equivalent to 2.7 million families) affected by the weather disturbances in Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Calabarzon, Cordillera Administrative Region, Metro Manila, and Mimaropa.

Over 71,000 individuals (roughly 20,279 families) remained billeted in 968 evacuation centers as flood has yet to subside in 711 areas.

The OCD also reported 3,900 damaged houses, 538 of which were classified as “beyond repair.”

The cost of damage in infrastructure reached P6.27 billion, while agricultural damage was placed at P2.84 billion. State of calamity has already been declared in 178 cities and municipalities.
