Congratulations, You’re Now Part Plastic

YOU RECYCLE YOUR plastic. Too bad some of it has already recycled itself… into you.

Once upon a time, plastic lived where it belonged—in grocery bags, shampoo bottles, and those mysterious food containers that never seem to have matching lids.

Now?

It lives in you.

Congratulations.

You may be carrying tiny bits of plastic in your blood, lungs, liver, arteries, and yes—even your brain.

No, this isn’t the plot of a low-budget sci-fi movie.

It’s real.

Scientists have been finding microscopic plastic particles in more and more parts of the human body. These particles, called microplastics, are exactly what they sound like: tiny fragments shed from larger plastic items or manufactured at microscopic sizes. They’re so small that we breathe them in, drink them, and eat them without noticing.

Every sip from a plastic bottle, every takeout container, every synthetic fabric that sheds invisible fibers adds a little more to the pile.

Before you throw out every plastic item in your house and start drinking rainwater from a coconut shell, relax.

Finding microplastics in the body does not automatically mean they’re causing disease.

That’s the part social media conveniently leaves out.

Scientists are still trying to answer the big questions. How much plastic is too much? Does it directly cause illness? Which particles are harmless, and which aren’t?

We don’t have all the answers yet.

What we do know is that laboratory studies suggest some microplastics may trigger inflammation, interfere with cells, or carry harmful chemicals. Whether those effects happen to the same extent inside real people is still being investigated.

In other words, the evidence is concerning—but it’s not a reason to panic.

Life Hack

You don’t have to live like a hermit to reduce your exposure.

A few simple habits can make a difference:

  • Drink from stainless steel or glass whenever practical.
  • Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers.
  • Cut back on bottled water if safe tap or filtered water is available.
  • Choose fresh food more often than heavily packaged products.
  • Vacuum and dust regularly. Household dust is one of the places where microplastics like to hide.

Will these eliminate your exposure?

No.

Unless you’re planning to move to Mars.

But they’ll probably reduce it.

The Acupuncture Angle

No, acupuncture cannot pull plastic out of your brain.

If anyone tells you it can, walk away—and take your wallet with you.

What acupuncture can do is help manage stress, improve sleep, and support overall well-being. That’s useful because worrying about every new health headline won’t make you healthier.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is separate scientific evidence from internet drama.

Local Color

Filipinos love convenience.

Plastic cups for coffee.

Plastic sachets for shampoo.

Plastic wrappers for snacks.

Plastic bags inside plastic bags that we proudly keep inside another plastic bag.

It’s become part of daily life.

The problem isn’t one spoon or one water bottle.

It’s decades of constant exposure from a world wrapped in plastic.

The Certified Prick’s Prescription

Don’t obsess.

Don’t ignore it either.

The goal isn’t to become plastic-free.

That’s almost impossible in today’s world.

The goal is to be plastic-smart.

Reduce what you reasonably can.

Avoid what you easily can.

And don’t fall for influencers promising a miracle “plastic detox.”

Your kidneys aren’t recycling centers.

Your liver isn’t a garbage truck.

And no juice cleanse is going to turn you back into 100% organic.

You may already be part plastic.

But you still have complete control over something far more important:

The choices you make every single day.
