Are Your Kids Drinking the Right Milk?

CHOOSING MILK FOR a child can sometimes feel like a guessing game. There is the familiar brand. There is milk with an impressive-looking label. Then there are claims about vitamins, minerals, immunity, growth and everything else a parent supposedly needs to look for.

But perhaps parents should pause and ask a simpler question: What is actually inside the can?

I believe this is where many parents may need to become more curious consumers.

A child refusing to finish a glass of milk, complaining of an upset stomach or struggling with hard stools does not automatically mean the milk is the problem. Children have different appetites, digestive patterns and nutritional needs.

Still, recurring concerns are worth discussing with a pediatrician and worth paying attention to when choosing food products.

And milk should not be judged solely by the attractive words printed on the front of the package.

Read the Ingredients

One practical habit parents can develop is turning the can around.

Check the ingredient list. What comes first? Is fresh milk among the primary ingredients? Is the product excessively sweet? What other ingredients are being added?

For me, this is a more meaningful way of looking at milk than simply counting the number of promises on the front label.

There is also the simple sensory test. A milk formula made from fresh milk would generally be expected to have a mild dairy aroma, a pleasant milky taste and a smooth consistency when prepared. Powder that dissolves reasonably well, without excessive clumping or foaming, can also make for a more pleasant drinking experience.

These observations are not a substitute for nutritional advice, of course. But they can help parents become more attentive to what they are buying.

Detail Worth Noticing

Fresh milk as the first ingredient is one detail that caught my attention when looking at FEIHE AceKid Activegro and AceKid 3+ with Lactoferrin.

The products are promoted as Fresh Milk Formula and, according to the manufacturer, use a one-step process that transforms fresh milk into powdered formula in as little as two hours. The company says this approach minimizes processing and high-heat treatment.

The products also list fresh milk as the first ingredient and contain no added sucrose or maltodextrin.

Whether a particular milk is the right choice, however, ultimately depends on the individual child. A product’s ingredient list can tell us a lot, but it should not replace advice from a qualified health professional, particularly when a child has persistent digestive problems, food sensitivities or other concerns.

The Bigger Lesson

Perhaps the bigger issue isn’t which milk is “best.” It is whether parents are looking closely enough.

In a market where packaging can make almost every product look like the perfect answer to a parent’s worries, reading the fine print may be more useful than reading the biggest words on the can.

Parents don’t need to become nutrition experts overnight. Sometimes, simply turning the package around, checking the ingredients and understanding what they are actually buying is already a good start.

Because when it comes to children’s nutrition, what’s inside the can matters more than what’s written on the front of it.
