Pagasa: La Mesa Dam Above Critical Level

THE HEAVY RAIN may have ceased for now, but flooding remains a threat, especially in areas encompassing the Tullahan River with the water level of La Mesa Dam in Quezon City still above its critical mark.

In its 5:00 AM hydrological situation report, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said

La Mesa Dam’s water level stood at 79.92 meters.

While the water level is deemed comparatively lower than the 80.1 meters recorded the day before, the weather bureau stressed that it is still above its critical level of 79.5 meters.

According to the weather bureau, excess water from La Mesa Dam will flow directly into the Tullahan River, affecting low-lying areas in the following Metro Manila cities:

  • Quezon City (Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome)
  • Caloocan City
  • Valenzuela City (North Expressway and La Huerta Subdivision)
  • Malabon City
  • Navotas City

“All residents living in the aforementioned areas, especially those residing near the riverbanks, are still advised to take necessary precautionary measures,” reads part of Pagasa’s situation update.

The weather bureau hinted at light to moderate rainfall expected over the watershed area for the next 12 hours.

Pagasa earlier reported that several Luzon provinces are forecast to experience heavy rainfall this Monday due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” being enhanced by Tropical Depression Pilandok.

The weather bureau said Pilandok, which is moving on a sustained wind speed of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday evening.
