MALACAÑANG finds no reason to extend the term of a retiring police general whom Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla is reportedly grooming to replace the country’s top cop.
In an announcement, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the active service of Calabarzon regional director Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan won’t be extended.
Remulla earlier asked the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) to extend for one year the active service of Marantan, who is set to reach the mandatory police retirement age of 56 on July 10, 2026.
“Wala pong extension para po kay General Marantan. At maaari po siyang makatulong sa ibang pamamaraan,” Castro told reporters.
In a letter addressed to the NAPOLCOM, Remulla said the request to extend the Calabarzon top cop’s active service was made “in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in the execution of critical and ongoing high-impact operations currently being spearheaded by Gen. Marantan.”
Meanwhile, Remulla said he respects the decision of the President — “I fully respect the President’s decision,” GMA News Online quoted Remulla.
Marantan was dismissed from the service in 2014 after being dragged in an alleged rubout in Atimonan, Quezon. He however was reinstated in 2017 after the NAPOLCOM appellate board approved his plea.
In 2025, a Manila court acquitted Marantan and 11 other police officers of murder charges over their involvement in the shootout.
